Check out <a href="http://www.overnightprints.com/" rel="nofollow">Overnight Prints</a> for all your waterless printing. They have online designers you can use for free as well as an upload tool allowing you to upload your own files. The prices are great and they can print pretty fast too!

Small is beautiful is a fantastic book which everyone on this planet needs to read urgently, whether they are designers or not. It should be a text book in schools everywhere. No logo is also brilliant and a real eye-opener. Every designer should read No Logo, otherwise we continue living in a glass bubble, which is proving very dangerous for the planet.

This is a super blog. I hope design schools all over the world know about it. Keep it up. I think you guys have really addressed the need of the hour, and given numerous useful suggestions on how we can make a difference.

You could also use Naked Binders, which use no virgin fiber. They are 100% recycled material from the state of Connecticut. Also, being constructed from a 110pt board, they are considerably sturdier than other recycled or green binders. www.nakedbinder.com

I recently began the effort to open the first "Eco-friendly","Green" Salon in the North Atlanta area. I put together 12 or so categories to have in the design of the leased space and incorporated in our daily routine of our business, ie. recycled paper for printed materials, use of non toxic cleaning products, low energy appliances, cfl lighting, recycled flooring, tankless water heating, in house filtered water-eliminating delivery service, eliminating plastic bottles and recycling all that we can.
The Salon Cafe' in Dacula, GA intends to reduce it's Carbon footprint, helping our community, helping to bring these possibilities to others.

Can anyone offer additional steps that I have not thought of or realized as a possibility within the realm of a Hair Salon within an already fabricated space.

Very Very true.. Smudging ink not only ruins the environment but it also causes you to use up more ink! It is very crucial to know that ink cost money and to help save the environment lets all use just a little less ink :O)

Except when your office building is air conditioned by a central air system and you don't have individual office climate control. If you open the windows while the building is centrally cooling, you're only going to let the air conditioning escape and make the system work all that much harder to get to its cooling goal. Many buildings work this way.

If it's a book or pamphlet and you print on smaller paper, you're likely to need more sheets to include all the info - so you'd be using even more paper than if you just went with the larger sheet...

Better yet, buy an existing home or condo to save on the resources to build a new one. New construction, no matter how green it is, still requires an investment of resources...especially one that is built on a newly developed lot or results in the demolition of an existing building.

I ran into something great yesterday that does just this: http://www.localcooling.com/?type=link&userid=69145

It's called LocalCooling and it's basically a really advanced power-manager/saver for your computer, with auto-shutdown and more.

It even converts your energy savings into trees and oil.

If you do it at a smaller size, you have less waste. It's best if you don't do it, but if you have to, try to reduce the amount of material by making it smaller.

It's tough to find clear PLA (poly lactic acid) but somewhat translucent is available. How well soy prints on it - I don't know yet. Should find info if you Google PLA.

Every job is suitable for recycled paper! 100% post consumer recycled! Check out the quality coming out of mills like New Leaf Paper. We just printed a high-end catalog with flood coats of ink and varnish and it printed beautifully. They also spec trees saved, water saved, energy saved, solid waste kept from landfills and pounds of greenhouse gases avoided for every print run and give you a small certificate to include on your print run. It isn't your parents recycled paper anymore.

This idea works only if your audience is not over 30, when eyesight begins to decline. It's best tp ask, "Does this type size pass the Old Fart Type Test?" For instance, the type size in the comments box is hard for me to read, especially set tight the way it is.

Sound Transit worked with Chuck Jones, Western Regional Sales Manager for InteliCoat Technologies, to identify a recyclable banner material. Valéron Strength Film product is categorized as a product in accordance with Recycle Symbol "2", and if the symbol is printed on the banner, it can be tossed into a regular recycle bin (make sure the Symbol "2" is showing). For more information, or to obtain a Valéron Recycle Statement, contact Chuck at cjones@intelicoat.com or 206-618-2559.

I have been studying natural bldg., designing bldgs. for various sites, and have built a long beautiful earthen/stone wall as a starter. Next yr. I have a one yr. sabbatical and am going to build a very small bldg. with a tiny tower on a mountainside with a view from the Rockies to Kansas. Materials will mostely be local stone, timber I thinned for fire mitigation, cob (sand, clay and straw), styrecob (recycled polystyrene, clay, and straw). Design is for solar gain, efficient use of space and water, will have a rocket stove and be a thing of beauty integrated into the site with great respect.
If anyone know of grants that might help support this project, please let me know. I will need a couple pieces of equipment and hired help to hoist beams.
I am a woman, 55 yrs. and will be doing most of the bldg. myself.
Thanks. Will post website of progress I hope.

Why isn't just using a bicycle for meetings or everything else considered before associating movement with car? Less energy consuming for your computer, and more energy for you.

Designers may be interested in checking out how they can print the exact amount of GHG emissions avoided, gallons wastewater reduced and trees saved on the back of each client's paper product (including business cards, brochures, flyers, catalogues, etc.) via www.greenprinteronline.com's automatic, eco-calculator. Businesses can thus demonstrate their sustainability commitment on paper in a convenient and affordable way on paper by working with each eco-savvy designer.

Good idea, bad example.
What's the difference between trimming the bleed on an oversized sheet and trimming it off a standard sheet? You're still left with waste that's hard to reuse.

I disagree with this suggestion. That said, however, all typefaces are not created equal. One face at 8 point may appear to be the same size as another at 10 point, and the converse is also true. Choose a typeface for its compactness and legibility. For example, set a page of text at any point size in Univers, Arial, Franklin Gothic, Vectora or any other similar face to see the difference. The same is obviously true for serif faces.

I think there's a bit more to this than saving a tree... how about cutting down on waste (if you were to throw out that file folder--for shame!!), or at least cut down on the amount of materials you recycle, and thus the amount of energy needed to recycle. Not to mention the energy required to make the file in the first place.

The "standard size sheet" issue is the hard part. Sheet size is going to be determined by sheet size from the mill and press size and is going to be trimmed anyway.

Less gratuitous white space. I like white space and beautiful layout as much as any other good designer but last year I designed an 8 page leaflet for a corporate organisation. A year later the same leaflet following the new corporate identity guidelines could not be designed in less than 16 pages.

In answer to Lucien's question, the one Glidehouse I've seen used a fiber optic system to "pipe" illumination as needed throughout the house. The building is also designed and sited to take advantage of natural light in a way most houses don't.

The problem with using PDFs is the load time / lag time pdfs often face, especially when using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Sometimes it's just faster to have a paper version rather than waiting for numerous people to open up the file.

I respectfully disagree with this point. Smaller main body text should be avoided. Having to read main text that is 8px can discourage users from reading because it's so small and you also alienate those with vision issues who need larger text. Reducing the amount of text (writing better site copy) is a better solution, which also serves SEO needs.

I'm not a designer - but here's something that bugs me about modern products - no off switch. We switch off our wireless lan at night and we have to do it by pulling out the power cord. That can't be right

Oh and clocks need to tell the time. Not microwaves.

Don't forget to also turn off the lights and other office equipment especially a laser printer and copiers.

Glad I was able to attend the event. Life is more hopeful knowing how many people care!

I wish Marty’s talk was in the morning. Banding Green is not something easily absorbed late in the day…

Somehow a NW Green Design Conference came to into my mind… Larry? Wendy? (Thank You!)

Turning green as I conclude!

I thought the workshop was fantastic. The variety of perspectives and contributions that your speakers shared were both inspirational and moving. I'm actually glad that you didn't present it as a strict "how-to". Yes, being green has a learning curve, but frankly, the "how-to's" of it can easily be googled, or read in a growing selections of books. I preferred the real-life stories — it opened my mind, left me free to imagine my own approach, and still has me thinking....Thank you!

Knowing there is a green-aware design community is very helpful and encouraging. Having a group to share ideas with going forward will be wonderful. I too wish there were more concrete examples of how to pitch green to clients. Many of the presentations talked about the same thing and I wish that they had been more different with more specifics. Overall, however, it was inspiring and I will bring a lot of useful information back to my team. Thanks for organizing this. It's the first step to get a larger audience on the same page.

Although it was interesting to hear people in the "green design" movement, I would have liked more concrete examples of the 101 things such as practical techniques for presenting a "green" strategy to clients. It would have been good to hear specifics about how to make your office green without a consultant which may be cost prohibitive for some smaller design studios. I also think that your seminar would do well to target print buyers and production managers since they share a large part in making those final paper and printer decisions especially for larger corporations.

Also, it would be helpful on your website link to have have a green dictionary to define terms like "carbon neutral" and "3BL" and even "sustainable". They were thrown about without much clarification and if your mission is to educate people you must first explore the language.

It would be nice if your next one could be held outside if weather permits. Participants can always see the powerpoint pdf presentation and the speaker's websites afterwards which would be an incentive to log on and really find out more.

Kudos to all involved.
